Choosing a line

Which cruise line suits a slot player?

There's no single right answer, and this page doesn't pick a winner. It lays out the things slot players usually weigh, how fast play earns, what the first cruise offer takes, free drinks, smoke, floor size, the games, cruise length and what an offer still costs, so you can see which lines fit the way you play.

Short answer

It depends on what you weigh most. Carnival and Holland America earn a point for every $2 of slot play, but neither publishes what the points bring, so you can't know an offer in advance. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Virgin Voyages earn a point per $5 and publish annual tiers, with a cruise from 2,500 points at Royal Caribbean. Princess and MSC count one sailing at a time, which suits a single hard-played cruise. Celebrity, Margaritaville and Virgin keep smoke out of the main casino, and Margaritaville serves free drinks to players at every tier.

Every figure below comes from our own line pages and guides, which cite the cruise lines. To turn your bets and nights into a ranking, use the rewards finder; to put two or three programs side by side, use compare casino programs.

Run your own numbers

This guide explains the trade-offs. The finder scores each program for your games, bets and nights, and the comparison shows every line's rates, tiers, fees and smoking rules in one table.

Terms with a dotted underline are explained when you tap or select them. See the full glossary.

How fast slot play earns

Every program counts coin-in (The total amount you bet, counting every wager, including winnings you play back.), and the rate is how many dollars of slot play earn one point. A lower number means faster earning, but a point buys different things on each line, so the rate alone doesn't tell you which line gives more back.

Rates are from each line's page in our directory and the detailed comparison. Princess doesn't publish its rate and MSC doesn't publish its rules, so those two are player reports. Video poker earns more slowly on most lines; the comparison has those rates too.

  • If earning per dollar matters mostCarnival and Holland America give the most points per slot dollar among the lines that publish a rate. The catch is that neither says what a given points total brings, so you find out from the offers that arrive.
  • If you want to know the price in advanceRoyal Caribbean, Celebrity and Virgin earn more slowly but publish their tier thresholds, so you can work out the play behind each perk before you sail.

Reaching a first cruise offer

The question most slot players really ask is how much play it takes before the casino hands you a cabin. The table turns each line's first cruise reward into slot play and the casino's average win from that play, at the 8% slot hold our economics page assumes. Ship holds aren't published, so treat the last column as an estimate, not a price.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Virgin, Princess and MSC rows are from what the first reward costs; Princess's 3,000 points also match the chart on our Princess page, and MSC's 8,000 is URComped's report on our MSC page. Norwegian's row is from our Norwegian casino offers guide, Margaritaville's from our Margaritaville page, which warns not to count on a free cruise at Silver.

One big cruise a year

Per-sailing programs reward a single cruise played hard: Princess's Sea You Soon, MSC's Dream Points and Norwegian's Points to Paradise all count the points from the sailing you're on. The flip side is that nothing carries over, so a quiet cruise starts you from zero again.

Several cruises a year

Annual tiers let play add up across sailings: Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Virgin and Norwegian count a program year. Once you reach a tier its perks last the rest of that year, which spreads the cost over every cruise you take. Our program-year deadlines guide has the cutoffs.

Free drinks while you play

Free drinks are almost always limited to the casino and to guests who are playing, and most lines start them at a tier or a points total. This table is from our free casino drinks guide, which shows the arithmetic behind each threshold.

LineWho gets themSlot play neededExpected loss at 8%Lasts for

Holland AmericaBy private offer, or as an Ultimate Games or Prestige inviteeNot published
Explora JourneysEveryone: drinks are in the fareNo casino program

MSC's own comp match page says casino drinks are "always on the house" while you play and gives no threshold. The drinks guide's advice applies here too: reaching a threshold only for drinks costs $240 to $2,000 in expected losses, far more than the drinks.

Smoke-free casinos

Slot players sit in one place for a long time, so smoke matters more to them than to most guests. Here's where each line stands, from our line pages and the comparison.

  • CelebrityCalls its casinos smoke-free, and its booking conditions say smoking isn't permitted in any casino. An older conduct policy still mentions casinos where smoking is allowed. Details
  • Margaritaville at SeaSmoking only in designated outdoor areas, so the casinos are non-smoking, though its ticket contract mentions "designated casino/night club spaces." Details
  • Virgin VoyagesNon-smoking main floor and high-limit rooms, with a separate smoking room that holds about 11 slots. Details
  • Holland AmericaNoordam and Zuiderdam are smoke-free; on the other ships active players may smoke in designated areas. Details
  • PrincessSmoking only at designated slot machines, and all table games are non-smoking. Enchanted, Regal, Royal, Discovery, Majestic and Star Princess also have an additional non-smoking room. Details
  • Royal CaribbeanMain casinos allow smoking with a non-smoking section, and press reports say Freedom, Allure, Harmony and Symphony got new or bigger non-smoking areas. Details
  • CarnivalMost casinos allow smoking. A list from Carnival's brand ambassador names 15 ships with non-smoking casino space Reported. Details
  • NorwegianBliss, Joy and Encore have a separate smoking room; on other ships active players may smoke. Details
  • MSCSeated players may smoke, though several ships reportedly made their main floors smoke-free. Details
  • Explora JourneysNon-smoking, but there's no casino rewards program. Details

If smoke rules out a line for you, the finder can move lines whose casino floors allow smoking out of the ranking. Ship-level notes are on each ship casino profile.

Size of the slot floor

A bigger floor means more machines to choose from, though not necessarily a quieter casino. Fleet totals come from the lines; per-ship counts come from our biggest ship casinos ranking, which keeps cruise-line figures and third-party figures apart.

LineSlots, as the line gives them
Royal CaribbeanMore than 6,000 slot and video poker machines across the fleet

  • Largest third-party countsHarmony of the Seas (500, a minimum or round figure), Oasis of the Seas (464) and Allure of the Seas (456).
  • Floor areaThe largest cruise-line figures are MSC Euribia and MSC Virtuosa (15,069 sq ft each); the largest third-party figure is Norwegian Escape (19,000 sq ft).
  • Smaller and calmerHolland America describes its casinos as smaller and calmer than the mega-ship floors, which some players prefer.

Only 94 of the 163 ship casinos in our directory have any published figure, and many are undated or older than a refit. A ship missing from the ranking hasn't been measured, not judged small. Celebrity's fleet total is from its casino page as shown on our Celebrity page.

Which slots are on board

If you're loyal to a particular game, check where it has been seen before you choose a ship. The slot library lists the ships where each game has been reported, and each ship's profile lists the games reported on it. Dragon Link, for example, has been reported on 12 ships.

Counts are the "slots spotted" totals on each line's page. A sighting is a report that a game was seen on a ship, not an inventory, so a higher count mostly means more reports for that line. Carnival also points to exclusive titles such as Matilda the Cash Cow and Wheel of Fortune (Carnival page).

Cruise length and ports

Casinos close while the ship is in port and open once it's back at sea, so the itinerary sets how many hours you can play. A two- or three-night trip may have only one full sea day, or none (when cruise casinos open). Length also changes what some programs ask for.

  • PrincessPublishes its Sea You Soon chart for four cruise lengths. On cruises up to 7 days, 3,000 points brings an interior plus $100 FreePlay. Chart
  • MSCReported thresholds are lower on shorter US sailings: an interior at 5,000 points on 2–5 nights against 8,000 on 6–8 nights Reported. Table
  • CarnivalDrinks On Us after about 1,000 points on cruises under 5 days, or 1,500 on longer ones (2019–20 figures). Drinks guide
  • Royal CaribbeanThe annual tier cruise is from select sailings of up to 7 nights, and Signature onboard credit is $25 on 3–4 night sailings, $50 on 5–6 nights and $75 on 7 nights or more. Details

To find ships leaving from your port, filter the ship casino profiles by "Sails from." Each line's page lists its ships.

What an offer still costs

A casino offer covers the cruise fare and little else, and what's left differs by line. These are from casino offers compared; to total up offers you hold, use what will this casino offer cost me?

  • Taxes and feesExtra on every line's offers except MSC's casino comps, which MSC says include them.
  • The second guestRoyal Caribbean and Celebrity "fare for 1" offers still charge a fare for guest 2. Free fares on Princess, Holland America and Norwegian certificates cover you and one guest.
  • Admin fees and depositsNorwegian charges an administration fee of $20 per person per day, which is $280 for two on a 7-night cruise. Virgin takes a $200 deposit that comes back as slot play. Princess takes $200 per guest for the first two guests and Holland America $100 per person, both returned as onboard credit. Carnival's Fun Match charges $100 per person, non-refundable.
  • Loyalty on a comp cruiseRoyal Caribbean's comped cruises earn Crown & Anchor nights, while Virgin's casino cruises don't earn Sailing Club credit. See casino comps vs cruise loyalty.

The play that earns the offer has a cost of its own; what a free casino cruise really costs works through real examples.

Putting it together

Start from the one or two things you care about most. Each pointer below restates the sections above; none of them is a verdict on which program is better value.

Most points per slot dollar

Look at Carnival and Holland America, which earn a point per $2 on slots. Expect to learn what that play brings from the invitations you receive, because neither publishes thresholds.

A cruise offer you can plan for

Look at Princess, which publishes the points for each Sea You Soon offer, and Norwegian's Points to Paradise. For annual tiers, Royal Caribbean's Prime starts at 2,500 points.

One cruise, played hard

Look at Princess, MSC and Norwegian's Points to Paradise, which count the sailing you're on. Their points don't carry over to the next cruise.

Free drinks without chasing a tier

Look at Margaritaville, which serves every Players Club tier, and Celebrity, where drinks start at Onyx (500 points). Explora includes drinks in the fare but has no casino program.

No smoke at your machine

Look at Celebrity, Margaritaville and Virgin Voyages, or Holland America's Noordam and Zuiderdam. Princess keeps smoking to designated slot machines.

The most machines to choose from

Look at Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships, which have the largest third-party counts, and Norwegian Bliss, which has the largest count published by a cruise line.

Now put in your own play

The finder turns your games, bets, hours and nights into a score for each program and shows the play needed for the next tier. The comparison puts any two or three lines side by side.

Set a budget before you board. Playing to reach a tier usually costs more in expected losses than the perks are worth, and every figure here is a long-run average; real results swing widely. If gambling stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER.
