Cruise casinos for UK players
Sailing from Southampton, Portsmouth or Dover? This is which lines with casino programs sail from the UK in 2026 and 2027, what currency the casino uses, the rules that change on UK sailings, whether you can earn in each line's program as a UK resident, and what HMRC says about winnings.
Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, MSC and Princess sail from Southampton, and Carnival from Dover. Virgin Voyages' last UK sailings left Portsmouth in August 2026. Most of these casinos run in US dollars even from Southampton; MSC is the exception, with onboard spending in pounds on Southampton departures. Royal Caribbean doesn't allow smoking in the casino on UK sailings.
Royal Caribbean's UK site is the clearest about casino rewards for UK guests. Most other lines don't say whether UK residents get casino offers, and Norwegian's offer terms exclude bookings through its UK office. HMRC's guidance says betting and gambling, as such, aren't trading, and someone placing a spread bet isn't taxed on the profits or given relief for losses.
Terms with a dotted underline are explained when you tap or select them.
Lines and ships from the UK, 2026–2027
Each line's own UK pages come first here; where we rely on trade or fan press, the item says "reported" with its date. Deployments change, so check the sailing before you book. The same details are in the "From the UK" items on each line page and the UK rows of our program comparison.
| Line | Sails from the UK | Casino currency | UK residents and the casino program |

| Celebrity | Southampton. Celebrity Apex, May to October 2027 on the UK site. | MSC | Southampton. MSC Preziosa until April 16, 2027, then MSC Meraviglia from May 18 to October 30, 2027. | Pounds on Southampton departures, per MSC's FAQ as checked for our MSC page. | Not stated; MSC's casino program pages are on its US site. |
| Princess | Southampton, its main UK port. Its UK site says Sky Princess, Majestic Princess, Caribbean Princess and Regal Princess operate from there, without giving years. For 2027, Princess says Sky Princess and Majestic Princess homeport in Southampton. | Not published. The UK casino page prices its casino credits at $25, $50 or $100. | The UK site describes Players Advantage (automatic enrollment when you play with your Medallion) but doesn't say who's eligible for offers. Tier Match is for US residents. |
| Holland America | Not published: we found no Holland America sailings from a UK port on the pages we opened. | Not published. | No. Casino offers are only for legal residents of the 50 US states, DC and Canada, 18 or older. |
Margaritaville at Sea sails only from US ports. Explora Journeys has no casino rewards program. For lines that aren't in this table, see British lines.
Currency on board
Sailing from a UK port doesn't mean the casino runs in pounds. Every other line we checked gives its casino limits, denominations or credits in US dollars, and Celebrity, Norwegian and Princess do so on their UK sites too. If your bank card adds a foreign transaction fee, it applies to casino charges on your cabin account as well as to the rest of your bill.
- MSC is the exceptionMSC's FAQ, as checked for our MSC page on October 22, lists the onboard currency by region, and for Southampton departures it's pounds. Its Mediterranean and Northern Europe cruises use euros.
- Dollar casinos from Southampton and DoverRoyal Caribbean's UK casino FAQ gives its SeaPass gaming limit as $10,000 a day. Celebrity's UK casino page gives SeaPass limits in dollars. Carnival's FAQ gives its Sail & Sign casino limits in USD. NCL's UK casino page lists slots from 1¢ to $100.
- Card charges and cash advancesMoving money from your cabin account onto a machine is a casino charge, and some lines add a fee unless your tier waives it. How paying works on each line.
Casino rules on UK sailings
The casino still opens only at sea. On a sailing from Southampton or Dover that usually means it opens once the ship is out of port, and it closes again for each port call; the ship's daily planner lists the times. When cruise casinos open explains the rules behind this.
- Royal Caribbean: no smoking in the casinoRoyal Caribbean's smoking FAQ says: "Smoking is not permitted in the casino for any ships sailing from Australia and the United Kingdom." On its other ships the casino has smoking and non-smoking areas. Sailings from Australia are covered in cruise casinos for Australian and NZ players.
- CelebrityIts UK casino page calls its casinos smoke-free.
- PrincessThe UK casino page lists smoking at designated machines on every ship in its table, including Sky, Majestic, Caribbean and Regal Princess; all table games are non-smoking. We found no separate rule for UK sailings.
- Virgin VoyagesIts FAQ says smoking isn't permitted in the casino, with a designated smoking room nearby.
- Other linesNot published: we found no UK-specific casino rules for Carnival, Norwegian or MSC. Each line's usual smoking rules are on its page and in the comparison.
Joining and earning as a UK resident
Playing on board with your cruise card earns points in each line's program wherever you live; what isn't always clear is whether casino offers, the free or discounted cruises, reach a UK address. This is what each line's own pages say.
- Royal CaribbeanThe clearest UK support. Its UK casino page links to the Club Royale offers page for the UK, and its UK site describes Club Royale tiers and casino offers. Club Royale is free for guests 18 and older (21 in Alaska), and you're enrolled automatically when you play with your SeaPass card.
- NorwegianNCL's casino offer terms say: "Casino offer must be booked in USD." They also say offers are "Not applicable to chartered dates, certain group types or CE or UK offices," so UK players can't book them through NCL's UK office. Its UK casino page gives a US problem-gambling number, 1-888-ADMIT-IT.
- Celebrity, Carnival, Virgin Voyages, MSC and PrincessNot published. None of the pages we opened says whether UK residents receive casino offers. Status-match programs we've covered for these lines, such as Carnival's Fun Match and Princess's Tier Match, are for US residents.
- Holland AmericaIts casino offer terms say offers are only for "legal residents of the 50 U.S./D.C. and Canada", and free play is issued in US dollars. We found no Holland America sailings from UK ports.
If you live in the UK and want offers, ask the casino host on board how offers reach UK members before you play for them. More on getting rated: opening and keeping casino accounts.
How old you have to be
On sailings from the UK most lines let you gamble at 18. The Alaska exceptions don't apply to sailings from the UK.
| Line | Age |
|---|---|
| Royal Caribbean | 18. The UK casino page lists "18+". |
| Celebrity | 18 to play, per the comparison. 21 for casino offers and the UK Blue Chip Club email sign-up. |
| Carnival | 18. Under-18s aren't allowed in the casino at any time. |
| Norwegian | 18 to play, per our Norwegian page. 21 with government photo ID to join Casinos At Sea Rewards. |
| Virgin Voyages | Adults-only ships. Outside Alaska, Virgin says gaming age "will follow applicable laws and our onboard policy". |
| MSC, Princess | 18, per the comparison. |
Tax for UK players
We quote HMRC rather than summarize it, because the wording matters. This isn't tax advice; if you gamble a lot or professionally, ask an accountant.
- HMRC's position on gamblingHMRC's Business Income Manual (BIM22015, updated August 4, 2026) says: "The basic position is that betting and gambling, as such, do not constitute trading." Of a person placing a spread bet, it says: "They are not taxable on the profits, nor do they receive relief for their losses." It also says that "an organised activity to make profits out of the gambling public will normally amount to trading."
- What GOV.UK listsGOV.UK's Income Tax introduction lists "premium bond or National Lottery wins" among the things you don't pay tax on. It doesn't mention casino winnings by name.
- US forms on boardCarnival's FAQ says it files an IRS Form W-2G for slot jackpots of $1,200 or more, and withholds tax at 29% if the winner can't provide a valid Social Security Number. How that works, and what non-US players can do, is in cruise casino winnings and taxes.
British lines
P&O Cruises and Cunard, the lines most UK cruisers know, also have casinos, but in the sources we checked neither runs a program that turns play into free cruises. Both are covered on our other cruise lines page. Ship-by-ship details, currency, smoking and age are in P&O Cruises and Cunard casinos.
Play responsibly
Decide on a budget before you board, in pounds, and remember that a dollar casino makes losses easy to underestimate. Stop when the budget's gone, and don't chase losses.
If gambling stops being fun
In the UK, contact the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, run by GamCare, for free, confidential support; GamCare also offers WhatsApp and online chat. If you need help right now and can't reach them, GamCare points to Samaritans on 116 123, or 999 in an emergency. In the US, call 1-800-GAMBLER. You can also ask the casino host about the line's exclusion list.
