Casino comps vs cruise loyalty

Most lines run two separate programs: a casino program that rewards gambling, and a loyalty program that rewards sailing and spending. On a comped casino cruise, some lines let both work at once. Others make you choose.

Short answer

It depends on the line. At one end, Royal Caribbean's comped cruises earn Crown & Anchor nights, and players report using their loyalty perks on them. At the other, Virgin Voyages treats casino cruises as ineligible: no Sailing Club credit and no Sailing Club perks. Celebrity gives no loyalty points on fully complimentary sailings, and most other lines don't publish a rule.

Ask the casino desk how a comp will be coded before you pay a deposit; a cheap paid fare that keeps your perks can be worth more than a free cabin.

Terms with a dotted underline are explained when you tap or select them.

Line by line

Two questions: does a casino comp cruise (A cruise the casino gives you free or discounted because of your play.) count toward the loyalty program, and can you use your loyalty perks while you're on it?

The two ends of the scale

Royal Caribbean: both programs work

Comped cruises earn Crown & Anchor nights, and The Points Guy's writer used her Crown & Anchor Diamond perks on a Club Royale comp cruise. Royal Caribbean Group's "Points Choice" also lets eligible loyalty points from casino sailings move between Crown & Anchor, Captain's Club and Silversea.

The two statuses stay separate: Crown & Anchor status is for life, while Club Royale resets every April. Royal Caribbean's own terms don't promise stacking, so treat it as current practice rather than a rule.

Virgin Voyages: casino or loyalty, not both

Virgin's Sailing Club terms exclude casino bookings, and its FAQ lists comped casino cruises as ineligible. On an excluded voyage you don't get your earned Sailing Club benefits, and Deep Blue Extras and Blue Extras perks don't apply either.

Casino cabin offers also can't be combined with any other voyage benefits, discounts or promotions, or used for Sailor Loot. On a casino offer you get casino perks only.

Combining casino offers with deals

  • Royal Caribbean and CelebrityA Stateroom Offer (A Royal Caribbean or Celebrity casino offer for a free or discounted cabin. It's different from a Dollars Off offer, which takes money off a fare.) doesn't combine with any other offer, but a Dollars Off offer can combine with in-market promotions. The Points Guy reported in 2022 that two offers in one household with the same code could become one upgraded cabin, and that an instant certificate discount and a free cruise can't both be used. Those details may be dated.
  • CelebrityBlue Chip credits are "not combinable with any other promotion or discount."
  • Virgin and MargaritavilleCasino offers don't combine with other promotions (Margaritaville: unless stated).
  • Carnival, NCL, MSC, Princess and Holland AmericaWe found no official stacking rules beyond each offer's own terms. Ask the casino host and read the offer.

Before you book a comp

  • Do the math both waysIf a line suspends loyalty perks on casino offers, a cheap paid fare that keeps your perks (and earns credit) can be worth more than a free cabin.
  • Ask how it's codedPerks often depend on how the booking is set up. Ask the casino desk whether loyalty credit and perks will apply before you pay a deposit.
  • Check your folio (Your onboard account: the running list of charges and credits on your cruise card.)Make sure loyalty perks you're entitled to actually show up, and raise it on board if they don't.
  • Partners add another layerLand-casino perks have their own stacking rules. See our partnerships guide.
